After an interesting and very enjoyable visit to Homestead Park in August our next and final visit for the year is to York Cemetery, another of the City’s treasures!
Early in the year, in February, we had a very good talk from Clive Dawson of York Cemetery Trust, the charity that rescued the run down, overgrown, more or less ‘abandoned’ site in the 1980s and turned it into the wonderful, tranquil resting place it is today. The ‘oasis in the City’ it’s often described as: a lovely 24 acre spot with 28,000 graves, 17,000 monuments and 2 listed buildings. Back in February Clive talked about the volunteer driven recovery in the 1980sn the plants and trees and why they were grown. On the 4th September Clive will give us a guided tour so we can see and hear on site about the transformation. We’ll be able to visit the chapel if its available on the day.
We meet at 2.00 pm on Thursday 4th September at the entrance to the Cemetery: the Gatehouse, 49 Cemetery Rd, York YO10 5AJ.
The nearest car park is Q Park (Barbican) YO10 4AH near the junction of Kent St and Cemetery Road. The car park is about 300 yards from the cemetery entrance.
The tour will tour will last about 60 mins and we’ll be able to wander at our leisure afterwards. There is a charge of £5 per person (please have cash which we’ll collect on the day!) which includes tea/coffee and biscuits at the finish. The tour route is wheelchair friendly, as (I believe) is a fair amount of the site).
If you’re coming please let John Short know by Monday September 1st
