Following a good and well attended talk a couple of weeks ago our NEXT TALK, on Thursday April 3rd  will be by Teresa Clements of the  Wakefield & North of England Tulip Society (WNETS)

Tulips are amazing flowers with a fascinating history.  WNETS is an old florists’ society dedicated to growing and showing tulips, particularly the English Florists’ Tulip. Originally established in Wakefield in 1836 by local tulip fanciers and enthusiasts it’s still thriving with supporters and members throughout the UK and around the world.  Members grow and show  a range of tulip varieties, dating back to the 1800’s, and maintain the traditional strict standards of Form, Purity and Colour set down by the early florists.

Teresa Clements will speak about the society’s history and role in the preservation and promotion of Tulips, especially English Tulips, over the past 200 years. Teresa is Chair of the RHS Bulbous Plants Committee and former Secretary of WNETS.

On Saturday 10th May the society holds its annual Show at Primrose Hall, , Wakefield  WF4 6EG. Enthusiastic members compete for prizes and cups across a range of 36 different classes covering both English and Dutch tulips. It’s open to the public from 14.30 to 16.30  It’s a friendly, very lively occasion but the competition is intense. If you haven’t been it’s a fascinating and very enjoyable visit . It’s one of those unique events Yorkshire does so well and tea and cake are on offer! It’s only an hour from York, easy to find and well worth the trip!

It’s not an organised or hosted GFT trip as such but at least a few of us are planning to go. If you’d like a lift or would like to offer a lift to a member please let me know and we can see what might be arranged.

Do you have a treasured, favourite spot in your garden?

The three brief discussions at the start of about member’s own gardening challenges have been worthwhile but for the next meeting we’re asking members to send us a photo of a favourite place in their garden and talk about it for a minute or so: why they like it so much, the challenge of keeping it how they like it.

Everyone will have one so, don’t be shy, send us a photo!
