Thursday, 5 March, Professor Alastair Fitter, is speaking about Mycorrhizal Fungi. What you may ask are Mycorrhizal Fungi …well most plants have this in their roots and they’re crucial to a plant’s ability to thrive. After an hour with Alastair we can be sure we’ll know a lot more and have enjoyed our time with him.Alastair has presented to us on a couple of occasions previously and he also showed us round Askham Bog a couple of years ago. An evening with Alistair is always full of interest/insights and this fascinating talk promises to be another!
Following a distinguished career at York University Alastair is now Emeritus Professor of Ecology and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He’s also been awarded a CBE and in 2024 received the prestigious Cadbury Medal from The Wildlife Trusts for his 50 years of service to conservation, particularly for his role in protecting Askham Bog
We look forward to seeing you on the 5th . If you’ve any friends or neighbours who would like to join us for evening please bring thema along, they’d be very welcome.
2. Gardening chat: at the start of the meeting we’d like to have a brief 5 – 10 minute discussion about the gardening conundrums you’d really like to crack this year. Describe the question in one minute (perhaps with a photo or two) and see what suggestions club members have! If you’ve something you’d like to discuss let us know a couple of days before the meeting and we can get them up on screen to prompt the discussion.
3. 2026 Programme: please note the date for the June visit in the 2026 programme circulated before Christmas is incorrect. The June visit to Kilpin Gardens is Wednesday the 3rd June at 2.00pm (and yes it is a Wednesday, this is because we couldn’t fix a visit there on a Thursday)
The date in the programme attached is correct and copies of the correct 2026 programme, as well as membership cards, will be available on the 5th February.
The rest of the programme is mainly new and interesting gardens and speakers but it also includes the return of a couple reliably excellent speakers, Alaistair Fitter and Doug Stuart, talking on topics very different from their previous ones!
Very many members have already paid for this year, thank you.
If you haven’t paid yet the membership fee for the year remains at £12.00 for another year (!). This covers the cost of all meetings and speakers in the village hall and includes the customary 10% discount at 6 local garden centres.
Hopefully you’ll be happy to renew your membership by paying the £12 into the Clubs Barclay’s Bank account. Sort code: 20-99-56, Account no: 60113298 (Green Finger Tips Club).
